KHUVSGUL LAKE
Lake Khuvsgul, located in the northwest of Mongolia near the Russian border within Khovsgol Province, is the largest freshwater lake in the country by volume and the second largest by surface area, covering approximately 2,760 square kilometers.
Situated at an elevation of 1,645 meters (5,397 feet) above sea level, it is a deep, ancient lake, estimated to be between 2 and 5 million years old, and is one of the world’s 17 ancient lakes, renowned for its pristine, ultraoligotrophic waters with exceptional clarity—up to 24.5 meters in transparency—making the water safe to drink without treatment.
